The Bedtime Stalling Playbook: A Tactical Breakdown of Excuses

Bedtime. The finish line of the parenting marathon. The moment we’ve been waiting for since the third snack request before noon. And yet, every night, without fail, our children transform into expert negotiators, master stallers, and bedtime-avoidance Olympians.   At @thetiredcouple, we’ve documented the chaos of bedtime many times (and, let’s be honest, laughed at our own misfortune). If you’ve ever found yourself promising “just one more story” or falling for the classic “I need water” trick, this post is for you.   Let’s break down the top bedtime stalling tactics, how to counter them, and a few parent-approved solutions (because sometimes, you just need a little help).   1. “I Need Water” The Tactic: Right as you tuck them in, their tiny voice chimes: “I’m sooo thirsty!” Suddenly, hydration is the most critical issue of their life. The Counterplay: Hand them a water bottle before bedtime so they can’t pull this one. If they still insist, well, you’ve already got your answer: They don’t need water. They need an excuse. (Bonus tip: Keep the water bottle somewhere in reach, so you don’t have to get up again.)   2. “Just One More Book!” The Tactic: Your child is a literary scholar… only at bedtime. You could barely get them to read earlier, but now? They’re desperate for another Goodnight Moon reading. The Counterplay: Set a clear two-book rule and stick to it. Or, if you want a game-changer, introduce a Tonies Box. This screen-free storytelling device lets kids listen to stories on demand, meaning they feel in control—while you get to reclaim your evening.   📌 Affiliate Parent Hack: We love the Tonies Box for bedtime! It plays stories and music without a screen, and you can set a time limit, so once it’s done—so is bedtime.   3. “I’m Not Tired” The Tactic: Despite yawning through dinner and almost falling asleep in the bath, they are now suddenly full of energy. The Counterplay: This is where winding down before bed becomes crucial. Start dimming lights 30 minutes before, turn off any exciting TV shows, and swap high-energy play for something calming.   📌 Affiliate Parent Hack: The Kindle Fire Kids Edition is great for this because it lets you control screen time. Set it to go into “sleep mode” at bedtime, so there’s no negotiating when it’s time to power down. Bonus? The Kindle Fire has access to kid-friendly audiobooks to help transition into sleep mode.   4. “My Blanket/Sock/Pajamas Feel Weird” The Tactic: Suddenly, their cozy blanket is too hot, their sock is itchy, and their favorite pajamas feel off. They have never been more uncomfortable in their lives. The Counterplay: Anticipate this stall by making sure everything is comfy before bedtime. But let’s be honest—sometimes, this is just a distraction. In that case, a simple, calm response like “We’ll fix it in the morning” helps move things along. *(Or, if you’re dealing with a particularly persistent child, offer a “one-time blanket fix” deal—after that, no more negotiations!)   5. “I Forgot to Tell You Something Super Important!” The Tactic: Right as you’re closing the door, your child suddenly remembers the most critical piece of information ever. It might be about a toy they saw three weeks ago, a random thought about dinosaurs, or a full recap of a movie you didn’t even know they watched. The Counterplay: Tell them you can’t wait to hear it in the morning. If they resist, remind them, “If it’s really important, you’ll still remember it tomorrow!” 99% of the time, they won’t. (And if they do? Well, at least you’ll hear it over coffee instead of at bedtime.)   6. The Stealth Escape The Tactic: You think they’re asleep. You tiptoe out, sigh in relief, and then—suddenly—a shadowy figure appears in the hallway. They have escaped. The Counterplay: If they keep sneaking out, walk them back to bed with minimal interaction. The less attention they get, the less fun it becomes. (And if you hear them up but they don’t come out? Well… if they’re quiet, maybe just let it slide.)   Winning Bedtime: The Final Thoughts Bedtime stalling is an art, and our kids are the Picassos. The key is to stay consistent, keep your sense of humor, and have a few parent-approved tricks up your sleeve.   If you’re looking for ways to make bedtime easier, check out our parent-approved recommendations: ✅ Tonies Box – for independent, screen-free bedtime stories✅ Kindle Fire Kids – for screen-time control and audiobook options   And don’t forget to follow @thetiredcouple on Instagram for more real-life parenting wins and fails—because bedtime struggles are better when we all laugh about them together.   What’s the wildest bedtime excuse you’ve heard? The Top 5 Things People Don’t Tell You About Parenting

Parenting advice is everywhere. You’ll hear all about sleep schedules, the importance of tummy time, and how “the days are long, but the years are short.” But what about the real truths—the ones no one warns you about until you’re in the trenches, covered in applesauce, wondering how your life became a never-ending episode of Survivor? At The Tired Couple, we’re here to keep it real. If you follow us on @thetiredcouple, you already know we share the unfiltered, hilarious, and downright exhausting side of parenting. So here it is—the Top 5 Things No One Tells You About Parenting (but absolutely should). 1. Your House Will Never Be Clean Again—Ever You might think, I’ll just tidy up when they nap. Nope. First, they won’t nap when you need them to. Second, as soon as you clean something, they will unclean it immediately. You will spend more time cleaning up LEGOs than you ever thought humanly possible. Toys will migrate to every corner of your house, including inside your shoes. You’ll embrace phrases like, “It’s clean enough,” while learning to live with sticky handprints on every surface. (Pro tip: If you’re looking for a distraction so you can at least clean one room, the Kindle Fire Kids is a lifesaver. Seriously, check it out.) 2. You Will Never Eat a Warm Meal Again Say goodbye to hot coffee and warm dinners. Your food will always be lukewarm at best because, by the time you sit down, someone will need more ketchup, a different cup, or a trip to the bathroom. And if you try to sneak a bite? You’ll instantly hear, “Can I have some?” even though they swore they weren’t hungry. 3. Your Food Is No Longer Your Food If you think you still have personal food boundaries, think again. The second you make yourself a snack, your kids will suddenly develop an urgent, desperate need for exactly what you’re eating—even if they just finished a meal. That slice of pizza? It’s community pizza now. That cookie you were hiding? They can smell it. And forget about eating in peace—every bite you take is an open invitation for tiny hands to steal from your plate. 4. Bedtime Is Not the End of Your Parenting Duties You might think, Once they’re asleep, I’m free! But no, bedtime is just the beginning of the second shift. You’ll spend the next hour cleaning up, folding laundry, and scrolling social media (probably following @thetiredcouple for relatable content). And just when you start to relax—boom—someone wakes up because they need water, had a bad dream, or just felt like checking in at 2 AM. 5. You Will Love Them More Than You Thought Possible Despite the chaos, the sleepless nights, and the fact that you haven’t had a real day off in years, you wouldn’t trade it for anything. Because those tiny hugs, those giggles, and the way they call you Mommy or Daddy—it makes it all worth it. Parenting is messy, exhausting, and completely unpredictable. But if you’re here, you’re doing it right.  Follow @thetiredcouple for more laughs, survival tips, and the best parenting hacks. (And if you just need a moment of peace, get yourself a Kindle Fire Kids—trust us, you’ll thank us later.)

The Art of Parenting Decisions: Choosing Battles and Sanity

Parenting is basically an endless series of decisions—some big, some small, and some so ridiculously pointless that you wonder why you even wasted the brainpower. If you follow us on @thetiredcouple, you know we’re all about picking our battles wisely because, let’s be honest, some decisions just aren’t worth the fight.   Here’s a rundown of some of the most important (and hilarious) parenting decisions we make daily, proving that sometimes survival is more important than perfection.   1. Matching Socks: A Lost Cause Once upon a time, we cared about matching socks. We believed in neatly paired, color-coordinated little feet. Then we had kids. Now, if we can even find two socks—any two socks—that somewhat resemble fabric, it’s a victory. Stripes with dinosaurs? Cool. One Paw Patrol, one plain white? Fashion statement. The real decision here? Do we waste time looking for a match or just embrace the chaos? Answer: Chaos wins. Every time.   2. Cooking a Meal vs. Serving Another PB&J There’s a moment every parent faces: Do I attempt a real meal, or do I just give in to the peanut butter and jelly sandwich lifestyle? Some nights, we fight the good fight and whip up a home-cooked dinner. Other nights, when we’re met with whining, “This is yucky!” before they even look at their plate, we surrender and serve the beloved PB&J. Bonus points if we cut it into a shape so it feels fancy.   3. Answering the 100th “Why?” vs. Faking a Phone Call Kids have a never-ending stream of questions. “Why is the sky blue?” “Why do birds fly?” “Why do you get mad when I put Play-Doh in the carpet?” Some days, we try to answer with wisdom and patience. Other days, we pretend to take a very important, totally fake phone call just to avoid explaining for the 100th time why we can’t eat ice cream for dinner.   4. Bath Time: Necessary or Negotiable? There’s a fine line between “My kid is dirty” and “My kid is so dirty that society might judge me.” If it’s been a long day, and they didn’t roll in actual mud, we might just declare it a “wipe-down night.” Baby wipes and a spritz of detangler? Good enough.   5. Cleaning the House vs. Pretending It’s a Life Lesson Every parent has faced this dilemma: Spend hours cleaning, only for it to be destroyed in minutes, or just embrace the mess? The answer? Turn it into a “learning experience.” Instead of cleaning the toy tornado, we confidently declare, “We let them be creative. The mess is part of their imagination.” (Even if we’re secretly crying inside.)   Parenting is Decision Overload At the end of the day, parenting is about choosing where to put your energy. Some decisions—like safety, love, and raising good humans—are worth every ounce of effort. Others—like matching socks and gourmet toddler meals—are best left to fate. So, if you ever feel like you’re making questionable parenting choices, just know—you’re not alone. Follow us on @thetiredcouple for more relatable parenting chaos, must-have products, and survival tips.   And if you’re looking for a little help keeping kids entertained while you make those tough parenting calls, check out the Kindle Fire Kids—a lifesaver for road trips, quiet moments, and keeping them off your phone.

10 Free Activities to Keep Your Kids Entertained

Parenting is expensive—there’s no sugarcoating it. Between snacks, toys, and surprise “fundraisers” from school, it sometimes feels like our wallets are in a constant state of distress. But keeping kids entertained doesn’t have to cost a fortune! There are plenty of fun (and totally free) activities that will keep them busy while you sip your much-needed coffee.   If you follow us on @thetiredcouple, you know we love finding ways to survive parenting without breaking the bank. So, here are 10 free things to do with kids that will keep them happy—and give you a moment to breathe.   1. Library Storytime & Activities Local libraries aren’t just for books—they have free story time sessions, craft activities, and even music events. Plus, you can check out books and movies to keep the fun going at home. Bonus: It’s quiet and somewhat calm.   2. Nature Scavenger Hunt Head outside and turn a simple walk into an adventure. Make a list of things for your kids to find—like a pinecone, a bird, or something yellow. If you have competitive kids, set a timer and make it a race.   3. Playground Hopping Instead of the same old playground, try a new one in a different neighborhood. A new slide? Swings? Monkey bars? Instant excitement for them, minimal effort for you.   4. Indoor Obstacle Course Use pillows, chairs, and blankets to build a DIY obstacle course. Bonus points if you time them and pretend they’re on an action-packed mission.   5. Local Events & Festivals Check out your town’s event calendar—there are often free concerts, parades, and kid-friendly festivals. They get to run around, and you get to pretend you’re at a social event instead of just wrangling children.   6. DIY Movie Night Pop some popcorn, grab blankets, and turn your living room into a theater. Let the kids make “tickets” and pick the movie. If you really want to impress them, make it a drive-in with cardboard box “cars.”   7. Splash Pads & Water Play In warmer months, local splash pads are a lifesaver. No splash pad? Buckets of water, cups, and a hose in the backyard = endless fun. (And yes, they will still end up soaking wet.)   8. Free Museum Days Many museums have designated free admission days or free kids’ entry. Science museums, art galleries, and history exhibits? Free fun and a chance to pretend you’re doing something educational.   9. Bike Rides & Scooters A simple ride around the neighborhood can burn energy and keep them entertained. Pro tip: Pick a route that doesn’t pass by an ice cream shop unless you want an argument.   10. Build a Fort & Read Books A few chairs, some blankets, and flashlights = the ultimate hideout. Add some books, and suddenly it’s a cozy reading nook (or at least a place for them to play while you drink your coffee in peace).   Parenting Hack: Want more budget-friendly activities, relatable parenting fails, and must-have product recommendations? Follow us on @thetiredcouple for daily survival tips and laughs!   And if you need a screen-time break? Check out the Kindle Fire Kids—great for keeping little ones entertained without the YouTube rabbit hole. 🚀

A Weekend of Wins: Arcades, Bounce Houses, and DIY Slime

Some weekends feel like pure survival mode—keeping the kids entertained just enough to avoid meltdowns. But every now and then, we pull off a successful parenting weekend. One where the kids have an absolute blast, everyone makes it out in one piece, and we feel (almost) like we have this whole parenting thing figured out. This was one of those weekends. Arcades, bounce houses, bumper cars, and even a DIY slime-making adventure. We’re exhausted, but the kids are happy, and honestly, that’s a win in our book. And if you follow @thetiredcouple on Instagram, you already know we captured every chaotic, sugar-fueled moment. The Ultimate Kid Paradise: Arcades, Bounce Houses & Bumper Cars We kicked things off with a trip to what can only be described as a child’s dream come true and a parent’s cardio workout—an arcade with an inflatable bounce house, a giant indoor playground, and bumper cars. 🏃‍♂️ Step 1: The Bounce House Challenge – Our kids ran, jumped, and collided with other tiny humans at full speed for what felt like hours. It was pure, chaotic energy. We were basically referees making sure no one got launched into space. 🎮 Step 2: The Arcade Hustle – The kids took control of the arcade, darting between games, collecting an absurd number of prize tickets, and somehow never choosing the one game that costs just one token. 🚗 Step 3: Bumper Cars & Sibling Rivalry – Nothing says family bonding like strapping your kids into tiny vehicles and letting them crash into each other at full speed. The laughter? Priceless. The whiplash? TBD. By the time we left, our kids were sweaty, sticky (from what, we’re still unsure), and clutching handfuls of questionable plastic prizes that somehow cost $40 in game tokens. DIY Slime: Because We Love Messes, Apparently As if our day wasn’t eventful enough, we made the bold decision to take our kids to a DIY slime-making studio. If you’ve never done this, here’s a quick summary: Step 1: The kids pick colors and mix-ins. (Glitter? Beads? Why not both?) Step 2: They stir, stretch, and somehow get slime everywhere except the actual container. Step 3: You go home with a neon-colored, sticky mess that will inevitably get stuck to the carpet. The kids? Thrilled.Us? Questioning everything. But hey, their faces lit up when they made their own slime, and that’s what matters. Right? Another Weekend in the Books By Sunday night, the kids were exhausted, sticky, and 100% convinced this was the best weekend ever. And honestly, that’s all we can ask for. Did we collapse on the couch afterward? Yes.Would we do it again? …Probably. If you love real-life, funny and chaotic parenting content, follow us on @thetiredcouple for more weekend adventures, survival tips, and affiliate deals on things that actually make parenting easier. 🚀

Why CVS Is Now Off-Limits for My Kids

There was a time when running errands with my kids felt doable. A quick stop at CVS? No problem. Grab some toothpaste, maybe some snacks, and be in and out in five minutes. But those days are over. Somewhere between toddlerhood and full-blown kid consumerism, my children have turned CVS into a personal shopping spree that I can no longer afford—or emotionally handle. The Moment I Knew We Were Done It started innocently enough. I needed to pick up my medicine at the pharmacy. Easy trip, right? Wrong. The second we walked in, my kids transformed into mini shopping experts with a “must-have” list longer than my grocery receipts. 🛑 First stop: The Stuffies. My youngest, wide-eyed, cradled a $12 stuffed bear like it was a rescue puppy. “He needs a home, Daddy!” she pleaded. We bought two. 🛑 Then, the snack aisle. My older one suddenly needed “emergency” M&M’s. (Spoiler: We have M&M’s at home.) We bought two. 🛑 Lip balms. Always the lip balms. Why does CVS have 300 different flavors of lip balm? We bought two.  🛑 Random beauty products. My five-year-old tried to convince me we needed more nail polish! For her! We bought two. For those interested, click here for a more kid friendly nail polish kit.  By the time we reached the register, my “quick errand” had turned into an exhausting negotiation that left me questioning all my life choices. The Final Straw: The Impulse Buy Section You know that tiny section right by the checkout? The one filled with mini hand sanitizers, last-minute candy, and overpriced keychains? Yeah, that’s where my kids thrive. While I’m trying to pay, they are loading up the counter like they just won a game show. The cashier looked at me with sympathy. “Would you like to sign up for ExtraCare Rewards?” she asked. No, ma’am. What I need is a parenting support group. So, What’s the Plan Now? Until my kids learn the difference between a necessity and a random object they suddenly can’t live without, CVS is officially a solo mission. Or, as we like to say over on @thetiredcouple, the only way to survive errands with kids is: 1️⃣ Go alone2️⃣ Distract them with snacks3️⃣ Bribe as necessary Because if I’m being honest? I just wanted my medicine. But I left CVS with two stuffed animals, two mystery-flavored lip balm, two bags of M&Ms, two bottles of nail polish and nearly $50 worth of regret. Relatable? Drop a comment or follow @thetiredcouple for more parenting survival stories. 🚀

Shoveling, Sledding & Super Bowl

Some Sundays are made for relaxation. This was not one of those Sundays. The Snow Removal Workout We woke up to four inches of fresh snow, which meant only one thing: shoveling. Nothing like a morning cardio session disguised as manual labor. I took primary responsibility for shoveling while my wife entertained the kids. Occasionally the kids wanted to “help,” which mostly involved them tossing snow back onto the freshly cleared driveway. Progress was questionable, but at least they were entertained. Sledding: Fun or Survival Challenge? After we finally conquered the driveway, it was time for sledding. Because why wouldn’t we voluntarily return outside in the cold after just shoveling ourselves free from it? The kids were beyond excited, which gave us just enough motivation to pack up and head to the nearest hill. Sledding with toddlers is equal parts fun and a test of parental reflexes. One second, they’re beaming with joy; the next, they’re face-first in the snow, demanding a snack. Somehow, we made it through an hour of climbing, sliding, and wiping noses before calling it a success and heading home. Super Bowl Party: Toddler Edition The Super Bowl is supposed to be about snacks, commercials, and football. Our version? Making buffalo chicken dip with a KitchenAid mixer (life-changing, by the way), chasing toddlers who refused to sit still for even one play, and pausing every 10 minutes to clean up a spill. We also cracked open a bottle of wine, thinking we’d unwind a bit. Spoiler: we didn’t finish it. By halftime, bath time took priority, and bedtime wasn’t far behind. As the game raged on, we were already tucked in by 9:30 p.m., blissfully unaware of the final score. The Takeaway Was it exhausting? Absolutely. Would we do it all again? Without question. These chaotic Sundays are what make parenting memorable. And if there’s one lesson from the day, it’s this: get yourself a KitchenAid for shredding chicken—it’s a game changer.

Divide and Conquer: A Parenting Survival Strategy

Some days in parenting require careful planning and coordination. Today was one of those days—both kids had different activities, and we had to split up to make it all work. Managing Two Events My wife took our older daughter to a birthday party for a 6-year-old. She brought a gift, a change of clothes in case of spills, and the patience required for a room full of excited children. Birthday parties at this age can be overwhelming, with loud music, energetic games, and plenty of sugar. I’m happy my wife volunteered for this one… Meanwhile, I took our youngest daughter to her swim lesson. Introducing a toddler to swimming comes with its own challenges. Some days, she’s eager to get in the water and practice floating. Other days, she’s more hesitant. Today went smoothly—she participated in the lesson, tried kicking and paddling, and even enjoyed a bit of floating with the instructor. It’s always rewarding to see her build confidence in the water. A Successful Afternoon After swim class, we dried off and changed without too much fuss. I avoided the post-lesson meltdown by offering a snack right away, a small but crucial victory. My wife sent me a message from the party saying everything was going well. Our older daughter was having fun, playing games, and enjoying the celebration. By the time we reunited at home, both kids were happy but visibly tired from their activities. The plan for the day had worked—we had each focused on one child, making sure they got to experience their event without feeling rushed or overlooked. The Final Challenge: Bedtime Now, all that’s left is bedtime. With how much energy they burned today, we’re optimistic that they’ll go down easily—though, as any parent knows, nothing is ever guaranteed. We’ll stick to our usual routine—bath, books, and lights out—and hope for the best. Fingers crossed that exhaustion wins over excitement, and we can end the day on a peaceful note. If any challenges, we’ll throw on the Tony Box with Elsa.  Days like this remind us that teamwork is essential in parenting. Splitting responsibilities allows both kids to have meaningful experiences while keeping the day manageable.
