Weekend Recap: Survival Mode Engaged

Ah, the weekend. A time to relax, recharge, and bask in the joy of uninterrupted family bonding. Or, if you have toddlers, a time to survive.

Saturday Morning: Swim Lessons & Ice-Cold Regret

Saturday kicked off with swim lessons because nothing screams “great parenting” like forcing your kids into a freezing pool at 8 AM. The water was allegedly heated, but I’m convinced the instructor was just gaslighting us. The kids shivered, flailed, and had a grand old time while I stood on the sidelines questioning all my life choices.

The Great Indoors: Weather-Induced Chaos

Since the temperature outside was roughly that of the Arctic tundra, we pivoted to indoor activities—aka turning my living room into a lawless wasteland of toys, couch cushion forts, and questionable crayon-based wall art. I attempted a structured craft project, but after about three minutes, my toddler declared glue was now a snack, and I called it quits.

A Walk to Dunkin’ Donuts: The Bribe Mission

Bribery is a cornerstone of effective parenting, which is why I dangled the promise of munchkins as bait for a walk to Dunkin’ Donuts. The fresh air was nice, but negotiating with a three-year-old about why she can’t have six chocolate frosted donuts “just because” was less so.

The Grocery Store Gauntlet

Grocery shopping with two toddlers is a strategic military operation. One kid in the cart, one loose like an unhinged raccoon, and me, running interference. My youngest attempted to shoplift a banana while my oldest had a meltdown in the frozen food aisle because I wouldn’t let her buy shrimp (she doesn’t eat shrimp).

Meal Prep Madness

We got home and spent the next two hours meal-prepping because apparently, these kids expect to eat multiple times a day, every single day. Chicken, pasta, veggies—enough to last us the week, or at least until Monday when they declare they no longer like anything I made.

Wine O’Clock and Hockey Disappointment

After the kids were finally unconscious, I treated myself to an entire bottle of wine and turned on the NY Rangers game. I had high hopes. Then, of course, they lost to the Boston Bruins. Because why not pile on the suffering? However, they totally redeemed themselves on Sunday with a win over Vegas. Either way, this season is hopeless much like the last 30 seasons…

Cleaning the Garage AKA Avoiding Real Responsibilities

On Sunday, I decided to “clean the garage,” which is dad code for “hiding from my family for an hour while pretending to organize stuff.” In reality, I moved some boxes around, stared into the abyss, and debated whether I should start a new, unnecessary home project. Truthfully, might have been the most productive I was all weekend. I did end up packing away the rest of the holiday decorations, throwing a bunch of clutter out and re-organized the beer fridge!

A Wholesome Trip to the Library

Feeling guilty for my garage disappearance, I took the kids to the library, which was the best idea I had all weekend. They were entertained, I got to sit for a whole 10 minutes, and no one asked me for a snack. A true parenting miracle.

The Aftermath

By Sunday night, the house was a wreck, the meal prep was already being rejected, and I had accepted my fate. The weekend warrior battle was lost, but I live to fight another day. And by “fight,” I mean drink more coffee and wonder when my kids will start sleeping in past 6 AM.

All things considered it was a successful weekend of family bonding and fun. It doesn’t make the struggle less real but deep down I know I’ll miss these days when they’re older.

Until next weekend, fellow tired dads—stay strong, stay caffeinated, and stock up on munchkins.
