Let’s get one thing straight—parenting isn’t about perfection, it’s about survival. And along the way, we’ve learned there are a few things that just aren’t worth the stress. Here are five things we’ve completely stopped caring about since becoming parents—and why you should, too.
1. Matching Socks
Once upon a time, our kids had matching socks. Now? It’s a miracle if we find two socks, let alone matching ones. Our daughter rocks stripes with dinosaurs, and we pretend it’s intentional. (Fashion-forward, right?)
2. Eating Warm Meals
Hot food? Cute concept. We now eat in rotations—one of us shoveling in bites while the other negotiates with a toddler about broccoli. If you’re a parent who eats warm meals regularly, please tell us your secret (or your nanny’s name).
3. Our Food Is No Longer Our Food
Whatever we’re eating immediately becomes “community property.” You can be holding a plate of spicy curry and somehow, a child will demand a bite—then cry because it’s “too spicy.” We’ve learned to snack in silence or hide in the pantry.
4. Having a Clean Car
Our car used to smell like new leather. Now it smells like chicken nuggets and broken dreams. Between the crushed Goldfish and forgotten juice boxes, our car is now a mobile snack bar. We’ll clean it someday… maybe.
5. Caring What Other Parents Think
Honestly, we used to stress about being “those parents.” Now? We’re just happy if no one cries during Target checkout. Parenting isn’t a competition—it’s a group therapy session in aisle 7.
