The Night My Toddler Staged a Sleep Rebellion

Last night, I had a dream that I was trapped in a never-ending cycle of exhaustion, desperately trying to sleep while a small, relentless creature kept waking me up for no apparent reason. Then I realized—it wasn’t a dream. It was just my toddler refusing to sleep through the night. Again.

At this point, my sleep schedule is about as stable as a Jenga tower built by a three-year-old. I go to bed every night with the naive hope that tonight will be different. Maybe, just maybe, my child will sleep like a normal human being instead of a malfunctioning Roomba that randomly turns on at 2:00 a.m. to scream for no reason.

The Midnight Wake-Up Call

It always starts the same way. I drift off into a peaceful sleep, dreaming of a world where I’m well-rested and can drink hot coffee in silence. Then, suddenly—BAM! A tiny voice pierces the darkness:

“Daaaaaad? Daaaaaad?”

I freeze. If I stay completely still, maybe they’ll think I’m asleep and go back to bed. It’s a risky strategy, but desperate times call for desperate measures.

“DAAAAAAAD!!!”

Welp. That didn’t work.

I stumble out of bed, half-conscious, and shuffle to their room like a zombie with questionable decision-making skills.

The Negotiation Phase

“What’s wrong, buddy?” I ask, squinting through the darkness.

“I need water.”

Of course. They couldn’t possibly drink the full cup of water I left on their nightstand for this exact situation. No, they need fresh, high-quality, just-poured water, preferably served in their favorite cup, which is currently missing.

After locating an acceptable beverage container, I tuck them back in, whisper “goodnight,” and tiptoe back to my room like I’m in a high-stakes heist movie. I slip under the covers and close my eyes, hoping for the best.

The False Sense of Security

Just as I start drifting off, I hear it again.

“Daaaaaad?”

You have got to be kidding me.

Back to their room I go, where I am informed of a sudden and urgent crisis. Maybe their blanket isn’t covering their left foot correctly. Maybe they just remembered a fun fact about dinosaurs that simply cannot wait until morning. Maybe they need to tell me, in vivid detail, about a dream they had where a puppy turned into a spaceship.

Regardless of the reason, I fix the situation, resettle them, and once again attempt to reclaim my sleep.

The Final Surrender

After multiple wake-up calls, I give up on the concept of restful sleep altogether. Instead, I lie in bed, staring at the ceiling, contemplating my life choices. Just as I finally start dozing off, I hear the unmistakable sound of tiny feet pattering down the hallway.

“Can I sleep in your bed?”

I sigh and scoot over. At this point, I’ll take whatever sleep I can get—even if it means getting repeatedly kicked in the ribs by a toddler who somehow takes up more space than a full-grown adult.

Conclusion: Send Help (or Coffee)

Morning arrives too soon, and I wake up feeling like I’ve been in a wrestling match with an octopus. My toddler, meanwhile, is somehow bright-eyed and full of energy, ready to start the day as if they didn’t just wage war on my sleep cycle all night.

If you see me today, just know that behind my tired eyes is a dad who loves his kids but is also seriously questioning why humans don’t hibernate.
